GAB April Meeting Minutes, Phase5 and more…

GAB April Meeting Minutes, Phase5 and more…

18 April 2020 JeanLuc
Author: Gulden Adviesraad

The meetings were divided over 2 online sessions. Hereby the summary of the minutes of both GAB meetings.

Points of discussion:

Livestreams

Jaap wants to work towards as much transparency of the GAB meetings as possible. The GAB has discussed this in detail among itself and also together with Rijk, and for the time being has come to the joint conclusion that too often confidential subjects were discussed during the meetings. Some of the GAB members also wondered whether they would have the same discussions with Gulden.com B.V. with live streaming as without live streaming. Live streaming of meetings is not yet an option. However, during meetings Jaap does want to consider why or not this is a confidential subject for as much transparency as possible.

Feedback on development points from the Gulden Community

As mentioned in the previous minutes, the GAB asked the community: “What would you like to see developed as soon as Phase 4 has started, with which a huge milestone has been reached. As an addition or clarification: Which large or small-scale development should take place? Where should the priority now lie?”

A number of reactions have been received and all reactions have been discussed. The majority of the GAB is of the opinion that most of the developments mentioned, including Nomad and zero-confirmation transactions, do not currently have the highest priority. The GAB also wonders whether a development such as Nomad would still add value, as it is a solution to a problem that arose 2 years ago. 0-confirmation transactions are certainly in the future development pipeline, but do not have the highest priority at the moment. There are developments that currently offer more added value for Gulden.

What will be developed in the short and medium to long term?

This has been the main point of discussion in the last two GAB meetings and also between the GAB members themselves. In the GAB meetings there have been several rounds of voting in which everyone has had the opportunity to plea their case. The GAB is pleased that a consensus of 9/9 GAB votes has been reached. All GAB members have agreed on the Roadmap of developments for the coming period. Both development team and the GAB are very enthusiastic about the choices made and jointly believe that these developments can bring Gulden to a higher decentralized and international level. The GAB wants to share this information with the Community step by step in the coming weeks, but first there is another important point of attention.

Phase5 rollout expected in about 2 weeks.

The activation of Phase4 was very successful and went almost without a hitch. Malcolm has been working hard after the activation to ensure that mining can run more efficiently and the block times will become even more stable. Since the introduction of SIGMA, the mining of Gulden has been done by means of CPUs. The developers are satisfied with the current operation, but still have an efficiency improvement in mind. Through this change, the CPU’s of the miners will be used more efficiently, which also results in lower energy consumption. This is also desirable because we are striving for a more climate-friendly blockchain.

Together with the GAB, Rijk has considered two options: -1. to carry out the update as quickly as possible, or -2. to wait a while, because there have of course been major mandatory updates recently. In order to implement this, another mandatory update (hardfork) is required and this is the Phase5 update. There is a consensus among the GAB members that this update can be rolled out as soon as possible. Updating the Guldern wallets as well as the witness devices is therefore necessary in the short term, probably in about 2 weeks to activate Phase5. The exact date and block height  will be communicated. In addition to the mentioned improvements for mining, the Phase5 update also cleans up the code that was first needed for backward compatibility.
